In-Depth Information
“Print Sharpening” allows you to add rudimentary sharpening to your
image with little control. The options are low, standard and high. My best
recommendation is to uncheck this box for no additional sharpening, as you
will not be able to see how much sharpening any setting applies, nor the
ef ects until you print the image. This is certainly one of the larger downsides
of printing from Lightroom.
If your printer manufacturer supports high-bit printing, check “16 Bit Output”.
The latest Epson and Canon Plug-In drivers have this option already (at least on
Mac Leopard systems). 16 Bit Output will deliver smoother tones, transitions,
gradients, shadows, midtones, and highlights will print more visible detail.

Color Management
Method 1: Color Managed by Printer
Just as with the Photoshop techniques previously illustrated, we can also
approach the print output using the Printer Color Management in Lightroom.
In the Print Job panel, by default the Color Management setting is set to
“Managed by Printer”. Many printer drivers seems to have problems properly
accepting Lightroom's color output.
After choosing “Color Managed by Printer”, Lightroom will gray out your
options for choosing a rendering intent, and provide a friendly reminder to
remember to turn on the printer color management controls once you hit
“Print”.
At this point you will exit Lightroom and enter the Operating System interface.
Continue to pages 290-291 for print settings in the OS.
Method 2: Color Managed by Other: Proi le
Most of Lightroom's Print Module features are fairly self-evident. Our
greatest concern here is in the color management portion at the bottom
of the interface. There are several important considerations and dropdown
selections that must be made correctly in this module in order to get a print
that looks anything like what you see on the monitor.
In the Print Job panel, by default the Color Management setting is set to
“Managed by Printer”. Move to the bottom of the interface to the Color
management box. Click on the drop-down next to proi le and choose “Other”.
When you select “Other”, Lightroom will show you a listing of all output proi les
currently installed on your system. Be sure to place a checkmark by the best
