Post-Crop Vignettes
In my work, I often use the Lens Vignetting sliders to darken edges, and also
as a basic Dodge and Burn tool for the corners of images. Lightroom 2.0 now
of ers a Vignette panel in the Develop Module, expanding the capabilities of
the two slider Vignette tools in Lightroom 1.0 - this tool was mostly created
to be a correction tool for removing the slightly dark edges around an image
caused by i lters, lens hoods and lenses. The previous tool worked fairly
well for that purpose, but it was far more useful when applied as a creative
application to add a darkening (or lightening) ef ect to the edge of images.
The major problem with the tool in Lightroom 1.0 is that it only applies the
vignette to the outer edges of the source image. This means that a cropped
image would lose the vignetting ef ect.
Lightroom 2.0 has now attempted to remedy this issue with a new Vignette
panel that adds the ability to dial in a vignette that is tied to the cropped
framing. Although the new ef ect appears more graphical than photographic,
it is a functionality of ering some new creative options with much more
control over features such as feathering and roundness.
There are four sliders in the Post-Crop section of the Vignette panel, of ering
a wide range of possible ef ects with various combinations of settings. Even
if you have not cropped the image, the Post-Crop sliders work just as well on
uncropped images as they do on cropped images.
