what is available with the more straightforward methods. Understanding the
foundations and principles behind the more complex techniques as well as
the advantages they provide will serve you well in putting these methods into
practice.
First, however, let us look at an image with two striking contrasting colors like
green and orange (see chameleon below). Sometimes the conversion method
causes the contrasting colors to become a similar shade of middle gray, and the
contrast and visual impact becomes lost in the translation as pictured below.
It is possible, however, to use conversion methods that can map specii c colors
separately from one another and translate the dif erences into contrasting
tones of gray. Notice the green color of the chameleon next to the orange
color of the kayak in the image background. The pizzazz of the original color
image and the spectral relationships between colors maintain integrity in the
more complex black and white conversion (previous page), and that image
now holds some of the same impact in black and white as it did in color.
