Step 7: Detail
All images benei t from some form of sharpening and many, even this one shot
at 100 ISO, enjoy a bit of noise reduction. As with all of Lightroom, the controls
are simple and very powerful. The best methods for user controlled sharpening
are still in Photoshop; however Lightroom can be useful for speed and ease.
Tip:
At 100% view, hold
down the option key
while pulling sliders to
see ghosted previews
of sharpening and
masking.
1. Before touching either slider, click with the (default) Hand tool to zoom in
to 100%, or you can use Lightroom's new 100% preview window to enjoy
“multiple views”.
2. Within the Detail palette, under “Sharpening” move the Amount slider to
the right until you see the results you like.
3. Now do the same with the Noise Reduction slider.
*Remember, for both controls these are only settings and can be adjusted at
any time for printing, exporting or previewing. Lightroom now has variable
output sharpening too, so you always have the right sharpening for preview,
print or web.
Step 8: Lens Correction
Vignetting is a way to dodge or burn just the corners of an image; doing
so correctly brings the center of the image into even more prominent
focus. (See Chapter 6 for a more detailed description.)
1. Within the Lens Corrections palette, under “Lens Vignetting” move the
Amount slider to the left (watch out for shadow clipping).
2. To control the range of the vignette, move the Midpoint slider.
3. Lightroom 2.0 brings more l exibility to vignetting with control over
feathering and roundness, and a truly re-editable feature via post-crop
vignette.
