Oxford Street “Must See!“
The Oxford Street lies the heart of central London's busiest shopping district. It runs from
Marble Arch to St Giles' Circus, crossing Tottenham Court Road and Charing Cross Road
on the way.
The street's present name comes from the Earl of Oxford who, in the 18th century, bought
up much of the surrounding land in order to develop it. This development continued until
the early 20th century and resulted in the thriving shopping area we see now.
Oxford Street is the most well known and most important shopping street in London and
one of the most strong-selling in all Europe. There are many shops like the famous in 1909
opened "Selfridges” Department Store.
Other famous stores are Debenhams, HMV, Marks & Spencer, Topshop, John Lewis as well
as a Virgin Megastore.
Each Christmas Oxford Street is decorated with festive lights. The Christmas lights began
in 1959, five years after the neighboring Regent Street began the tradition. In 1967, as re-
cession hit London, the lights were stopped and only returned in 1978 when Oxford Street
organized a laser display
We recommend you to exit “Tottenham Court Rd.” Tube station and walk towards “Oxford
Circus” further “Bond Street” until “Marble Arch” Station.
