London's Tube Network
The Tube is made up of 11 lines each bearing a traditional name and a standard color on
the Tube map. To plan your trip on the Tube work out first which station is closest to your
starting point and which closest to your destination.
You can change between lines at interchange stations. Since the Tube Map is well designed,
it is very easy to work out how to get between any two stations, and since each station is
clearly signed, it is easy to work out when to exit your train.
Be aware that distances are not scaled in central London Maps, so taking the Tube for just
one stop can be a waste of time as they might only be a couple of hundreds of meters away
from each other. This is especially true since the walk from a tube station entrance to the
platform at some central stations can be extensive.
London's transport map is divided into six concentric zones with Zones 1 and 2 in Central
London and Zone 6 covering the outer edge of the capital. You should consider an Oyster
card and/or a Travelcard to get the best fares and beat the queues. If you are caught on the
Tube without a valid ticket, you are liable for an on-the-spot fine.
In case you want to plan your trip, have a look at the official Transport for London website .
