In-Depth Information
There is in fact just one city worldwide with slightly more international tourists. The win-
ner is… The City of Love; Paris! 15.6 million International Visitors arrived in Paris in
2011.
London is slightly behind, but still gets an astonishing number of more than 15 million
tourists per year. To get a better impression we might have a look at New York with “only”
10 million hits.
London is the capital of the United Kingdom, which includes England, Wales, Scotland,
and Northern Ireland and has a recorded history dating back over 2,000 years.
During this time, it has grown to become one of the most significant financial and cultural
capitals of the world. It has experienced plague, devastating fire, civil war, aerial bombard-
ment, and terrorist attacks. The City of London is its historic core.
Situated on the River Thames in South-East England, Greater London has an official popu-
lation of nearly 8 million people — although the figure of over 14 million for the city's total
metropolitan area more accurately reflects London's size and importance. London is one of
the great "world cities," and remains a global capital of culture, fashion, finance, politics
and trade.
