Creating new roads
Creating roads in InfraWorks is amazingly easy. You begin by clicking the Create
icon on the main toolbar and then clicking the Roads icon on the Create tool-
bar. After that, just point and click to draw the path of your road. The road will
match the terrain surface at the locations you click and will create curves where
needed as your path changes direction. As you select points, a red outline of the
road will appear, and when you double-click the last point, the road will be cre-
ated in its full glory. See Figure 3.5 for an idea of what your screen looks like as
you draw the road.

fIgure 3.5 Roads can be drawn by clicking the icons in the order shown.
Unlike a CAD program where you are drawing lines and curves in a 2D view,
InfraWorks feels much more like you're creating a road by carving it right into the
landscape. This realism in design is not only fun, but it's also powerful because
your mind doesn't have to make the jump from “stick drawing” to a mental image
of what it will look like in the field. As you create the road, it and its surroundings
already look very real, and InfraWorks transforms the land adjacent to the road to
simulate the grading required to tie it in to existing conditions.
