Creating new design
Autodesk ® InfraWorks helps you convey your design ideas to others in
a stunning environment. It does this not just with pretty pictures but with
engineering-accurate models that are constructed based on sound design
principles. You spent the previous chapter building the base model, the con-
text for your design ideas. Now it's time to begin building the design. In this
chapter, you will learn several feature sets that will enable you to build the
major components of a typical design.
In this chapter, you'll learn to
Work with proposals
Create and edit roads
Create and edit coverages
Create and edit buildings
working with Proposals
In the early stages of design, you will want to consider multiple design ideas
so that you can compare them and choose the best one. InfraWorks propos-
als are designed for this very purpose. You can think of a proposal as a model
within a model. An InfraWorks proposal is a fully functional model complete
with data sources, like the terrain and imagery you have worked with, as well
as design elements such as roads, buildings, and pipelines. When you switch
from one proposal to another, you can potentially be switching from one
completely different design to another.
What are the advantages of this system? In most design programs you
typically create multiple files to represent multiple versions of a design. So, in
the case of Autodesk ® AutoCAD ® , for example, you might have Design1.dwg ,
Design2.dwg , and Design3.dwg . A similar setup in InfraWorks would require
three different SQLite files along with their associated folders. As you may have
noticed, an InfraWorks model consists of a large amount of data. That is part
