In-Depth Information
what does It All Mean?
As you selected the UTM83-17 coordinate system, you may have noticed additional
information listed next to it. UTM83-17 is an abbreviation with lots of informa-
tion packed in it. UTM stands for Universal Transverse Mercator, which is a type
of coordinate system that divides the earth into 60 zones.
83 represents NAD83, or North American Datum of 1983, which is a formal descrip-
tion of the shape of the earth that was established in 1983. 17 is the UTM zone,
which is the 17th out of 60 zones. By default, the unit of measurement for the
UTM system is a meter. An imperial variation of this coordinate system is UTM83-
17F, which indicates US Foot as the unit of measurement, or UTM83-17IF, which
utilizes the international foot. These are just a few examples of all the different
variables that differentiate one coordinate system from another.

After a pause, light blue tiles with hourglasses in them will appear.
Then, after a little more time, the tiles will become an aerial photograph
showing the town of Bimsville in the northwest corner (see FigureĀ 2.9).
