fIgure 4.12 A newly created stand
If some of the trees do not display or if your performance seems to
degrade considerably after this exercise, review the sidebar “Getting
Better Performance.” This may give you some ideas on how to make
improvements.

getting Better Performance
You may have found that your model performance really began to suffer after
creating the large number of trees in Exercise 4.2. Using InfraWorks often involves
a balancing act between showing detail in your model and still having the
navigation and editing functions run fast enough for you to work efficiently. At
times you may find it necessary to dial the visual settings of the model down a
bit in order to get better performance. Here are some ideas:
turn off High Visual Quality and Ambient occlusion You haven't
learned about Visual Effect settings yet, but these two particular settings just
can't wait. To access the Visual Effect settings, click the Tools and Settings icon on
the main toolbar and then click Visual Effects on the side toolbar. On this panel
is a setting called High Visual Quality, which you can simply turn off.
Without getting too technical, ambient occlusion makes things in your model
look more realistic by controlling the way light interacts with them. The effects
are visually subtle but not so subtle to your computer's resources. Your model
will look better if you turn ambient occlusion on, but if InfraWorks starts to bog
down, you may want to consider living with a slight degradation in visual qual-
ity as a trade-off for more speed. The numbers in the image below represent
the locations where you click to access this feature and the order in which you
should click them.
