cancer at its initial stages is slow growing and often remains
undetectable. Eating grapefruit regularly may prevent its
progression by promoting the repair of damaged DNA in
prostate cells, thus preventing them from becoming cancer-
ous (Gao et al., 2006).
A substantial number of studies have emanated on the
bioactive compounds including the flavanones of citrus
fruits in China (Lu et al., 2006), in grapefruit, lemons, and
limes (Peterson et al., 2006); the variation in the content of
bioactive flavonoids in different brands of grapefruit juice
(Vanamala et al., 2006); phenolic composition and antiox-
idant activity of grape cultivars grown in Turkey (Kelebek,
2010); biosynthesis of naringin in grapefruit (McIntosh and
Mansell, 1990); variance of common flavonoids by brand of
grapefruit juice (Ross et al., 2000); naringin and naringenin
content of grapefruit and juice (Ho et al., 2000); determi-
nation and control in grapefruit juice (Ribeiro and Ribeiro,
2008); and the supercritical fluid extraction of limonoids
and naringin from grapefruit (Yu et al., 2007).
Other health-related benefits include the enhanced up-
take of coenzyme Q10 in the human intestinal cell line
by grapefruit juice (Itagaki et al., 2010); effect of grape-
fruit juice on urinary excretion of citrate and urinary risk
factors for renal stone formation (Trinchieri et al., 2002)
and on urinary lithogenicity (Goldfarb and Asplin, 2001);
on blood cyclosporine concentration (Yee et al., 1995); on
drug metabolism in rats (Sharif and Ali, 1994); and the in-
hibition of 17 β -estradiol metabolism by grapefruit juice in
ovariectomized women (Schubert et al., 1994).
