independent basis for examining food consumption trends.
Per capita estimates are calculated by dividing the total an-
nual availability for a commodity by the US population for
that year. ERS manages and disseminates the food avail-
ability data within a data system posted on the ERS web-
site ( http://www.ers.usda.gov/Data/FoodConsumption/ ). In
recent years, ERS began adjusting per capita fruit con-
sumption estimates on the basis of postharvest loss esti-
mates, which averaged 11.4% at the retail level for fresh
fruit in 2006 (Buzby et al., 2009). The US per capita fruit
consumption estimates (per year) in 2008 were 122.6 lbs
