and sodium and high in potassium, vitamin A, vitamin
C, folate, and dietary fiber. Even more papaya contains
a broad spectrum of phytochemicals including flavonoids,
carotenoids, polyphenols, sterols, saponins, glycosides, and
alkaloids (Krishna et al., 2008). Some papaya cultivars con-
tain large quantities of lycopene, which has been shown
to have an antiproliferative effect on in vitro liver cancer
cells. It is also considered to have a mild laxative action
and the seeds are used medicinally against worms. Papaya
consumption has increased 94% in the last 10 years in
Mexico (main exporter). The EU is the second largest mar-
ket for papaya in the world after the United States in terms
of imported quantities and the largest in terms of imported
value. This can be explained by strong ethnic consump-
tion (principally Mexicans) settling in the United States.
Nevertheless, until 2000, papaya was relatively unknown
in the EU and scarcely available. Currently, consumption
of papaya is still modest. In 2007, Portuguese consumers
ate around 0.56 kg per person per year, followed by the
British (0.13 Kg) and Germans (0.09 kg). The overall EU
