NUTRITIONAL PROFILE AND
HEALTH BENEFITS
The composition and nutritional profile of raw mangoes and
mango nectar is shown in Table 15.5. The data given here
are for the fruit grown in the United States; therefore some
differences can be anticipated in composition of mangoes
from other parts of the world owing to different climatic
and soil conditions, agricultural practices, and postharvest
handling techniques. Additionally, varietal differences can

Mangoes are an excellent source of vitamins C and A,
both being important in human health. Vitamin C, pos-
sessing antioxidant properties, promotes healthy immune
function and collagen formation. A 100-g edible potion
of raw mango provides 765 mg or 25% of recommended
daily levels of vitamin A, which is important for vision
and bone growth. Mangoes are a good source of dietary
fiber too (NMB, 2011). Diets low in fat and high in fiber
have been associated with a reduced risk of some types of
cancers. Mango fruit is an excellent source of flavonoids,
