evacuating it from the tissue of the fruit and consequently
extending the storage life (Wu and Salunkhe, 1972). Burg
(1975) reported that 'Haden' mangoes ripened four times
slower at 150 mmHg than in air. These fruits ripened nor-
mally after storage, had less decay, and had a higher per-
centage of acceptable fruits. Mangoes (cv. 'O Krong') pre-
cooled at 15 ◦ C and, waxed, were maintained at 60-100 mm
Hg at 13 ◦ C for up to 4 weeks; fruit ripened normally without
adverse effect on quality (Ilangantileke and Salocke, 1989).

Low-pressure or hypobaric storage
Hypobaric or low-pressure storage is a type of CA stor-
age with emphasis on reducing the pressure exerted on the
storage material. This method not only reduces the O 2 con-
centration but also increases the diffusion of ethylene by
