Currently a prime destination for professional photogra-
phers and naturalists, Ecuador is home to virtually any-
thing you are looking (or listening) for. Dugout-canoe
rides in the Oriente provide seldom-witnessed exhibits of
nature at its finest. A predawn rise and hike through a fog-laden
cloud forest will amply reward the avid birder. Whether it is the tropi-
cal coastal rainforest, the Andes, or the Oriente, there are numerous
unbelievable destinations. All it takes is a bit of exploration and a
good guide.
The best wildlife and bird guides are usually locals and most likely
community members that grew up in and around a particular area.
Theymay not know the scientific names of certain birds, but they will
locate them well before anyone else. Complement this with a biolo-
gist, ornithologist, or photographer on a well-organized tour, and the
opportunities are endless. The best places for wildlife viewing,
birding, and photography are throughout the more pristine areas of
the Oriente, coastal cloud and rainforests along the western slopes,
