How to Call
When calling Ecuador from abroad, you must first dial the
international access code (011), then the country code (593 for Ecua-
dor), followed by the regional prefix (02 for Quito) and then the six- or
seven-digit local number.
For example, to call Quito from the US,
011-593-2-2444-704. Note
that when calling from abroad, you should drop the 0 in the regional
prefix, so 02 becomes 2.
When calling from within Ecuador, use the full regional prefix if you
are calling outside if your region. So, to call the above Quito number
from Guayaquil,
02-2444-704. If calling locally (in this case, from
within Quito), dial only the seven-digit local number (2444-704)
Internet Access
Internet access is readily available in cyber-cafés through-
out Ecuador's tourist towns, providing an inexpensive and
efficient way of communicating abroad. Internet cafés are
a dime a dozen in Quito, and you can usually find one or
two in less centralized towns as well, including Baños, Tena, and
Cuenca.
Mai There are post offices throughout the country, including
the more remote and smaller villages. Registering impor-
tant mail is recommended if you want to make sure it ar-
rives safely at its destination, though this offers little
security for important matters. For the most part, the Ecuadorian
postal system is unreliable. Some vendors will send souvenirs home
for you, but be cautious whom you trust, as many packages never ar-
rive when sent this way. Using a shipping company is one of the most
reliable options. There are several in Quito, Otavalo and other tour-
ist-oriented towns. One reliable service is DHL, located in Quito,
