Flights from the US often arrive late at night,
and the Quito airport can become fogged in
after 10 pm. The airport closes up and the lights
are all turned off at midnight. If the flight
cannot land at Quito, it is diverted to
Guayaquil where hotel rooms may quickly fill
as a result (an overnight on the floor or on the
plastic seats of the Guayaquil terminal
happens more often than American Airlines
will admit). As such, if you have to be in Quito
on a specific day, book to arrive a day earlier if
possible.
