Mountain Biking
There are limited opportunities to bike on Santa Cruz Is-
land, either through an operator or by renting a bike in
Puerto Ayora. Trips to the highlands offer a unique per-
spective of a different eco-zone than what most people see
during their visit. Bikes available vary in quality, but tend to be sub-
par. Inquire at the RedMangrove Inn , Av. Charles Darwin and Las
Frigatas,
/fax 5-526-564, formountain bike rentals, or talkwith the
travel agencies in town. The Red Mangrove Inn also has motorbikes,
kayaks and windsurf boards available for rent.
Mountain bikes and motorbikes can be rented from a few agencies in
Puerto Ayora, including Galápagos Discovery , Padre J Herrera,
5-526-245, who also operate cycling tours in the highlands.
Galápagos Discovery also rents surfboards.
On Horseback
There are few opportunities on the islands for horseback
riding. If you are spending a few days on Santa Cruz,
though, give it a try for a different experience here. Riding
is done primarily on Santa Cruz's highlands. Moonrise
Travel , Av. Charles Darwin,
/fax 5-526-403, is the
best agency to arrange for horseback riding on the island.

Hiking
This is a part of any organized tour or day trip to specific is-
lands. Trails are strictly regulated for foot traffic, and
more often than not the hikes are little more than strolls,
with plenty of wildlife viewing along the way. Neverthe-
less, they offer a perfect balance after spending a good amount of time
on a boat traveling between destinations.
