In-Depth Information
Several of the CBEs (Community-BasedEcotourismprojects), as well
as the higher-end ecolodges, offer camping excursion options on their
package tours. Note that typically such tours will be all-inclusive.
Unless you are a native of one of the local cultures or grew up in the
jungle, camping on your own in the heart of the undeveloped parts of
the Oriente will result in death.
Where to Eat
Puy The best deal is La Carihuela , associated with a popular
backpacker's hostal at Marín 576. It has a wide variety of
tasty selections, moderately priced and very popular with
foreign budget travelers. Mesón Europa , on Zambrano
near the bus terminal, is about as high end as it gets in this part of the
country, more expensive than La Carihuela. It serves tasty interna-
tional dishes.
For indigenous cuisine native to this region, head to Yana Puma ,at
9 de Octubre and Atahualpa. Tasty and cheap Amazonia-style meals
are served in this bamboo restaurant. No, they don't serve puma.
Tena
The buzz of young travelers combines with clean conditions and tasty
meals at Cositas Ricas , a restaurant associated with the Hostal
Traveler's Lodge, 15 de Noviembre 432,
6-886-372. The menu in-
cludes both vegetarian and Ecuadorian options. Prices are cheap and
portions are filling. The staff is friendly and will even track down a
cerveza for you if there isn't a cold one on hand.
The restaurant at Hotel Auca , in the northern part of town along the
river, also serves good local food. Prices are a bit higher than those at
Casitas Ricas, but the atmosphere is more pleasant and less of a
backpacker scene.
Chuquitos , on García Moreno by the plaza, caters to tourists, but is
very popular with locals as well. Located on the main plaza, its ambi-
ance is quite nice and its meals are typically Ecuadorian.
