Puyo
In Puyo most accommodations are very inexpensive. On the higher
end, Hostería Safari , located a few miles north of town on the road
to Tena ,
3-885-465, has been recommended for its location away
from the main hustle of downtown. $$-$$$
Much less expensive, but still with private baths and hot water, tele-
vision and fans (no air-conditioning), is the GránHotel Amazónico ,
in town at Marín and Atahualpa,
3-883-094. I can't vouch for the
restaurant. $
HosteriaTuringia , CeslaoMarín 294 on the road to Baños,
3-885-
180, turingia@punto.net.ec, is a popular stop for travelers. Just out-
side of town, these garden bungalows offer private baths and fans.
There's a good restaurant. $-$$
Macas
If you're heading to the far southern stretches of the Ecuadorian Am-
azon, try Hotel Peñon el Oriente , Calle Domingo Comín 837 and
Amazonas,
7-700-450. Although the town is pleas-
ant, there aren't many accommodation options here. The Oriente is
probably the best choice in town. It offers a rooftop view and an enjoy-
able atmosphere; overall a good value. $
7-700-124, fax/
I've also heard that the Manzana Real , on 29 de Mayo,
7-700-637,
is a good, inexpensive option, though every place inMacas is inexpen-
sive. $
