To get even farther away from the urban development, head down
the river about half an hour to Cabañas Anaconda , on Anaconda Is-
land. Here, peaceful surroundingsmay be close to civilization, but the
natural atmosphere is far removed. The only noises are the flow of the
river and the sounds of nature. The common dining area, bar, and
lounge offer electricity and comfort in an attractive setting. The
sleeping quarters are simple but comfortable and more than ade-
quate. The island itself is a great place to poke around and watch for
birds and butterflies, and the staff can organize various local excur-
sions, depending on your special interests. Overall, this is good value
and recommended if your goal is to just get away and relax in the
Oriente. $$
Contact them through NAPATUR, Juan León Mera 1312 and Luis
Cordero, Quito,
/fax 2-2545-426. Anaconda Island is
located down the Misualli River, across from the village of Ahuano
and Casa del Suizo.
2-2547-283,
Set in the village of Ahuano along the bank of the Napo, Casa del
Suizo is a high-end, luxury jungle resort. Awalled-in fortress of com-
fort, the Casa del Suizo stands in stark contrast to the surrounding
community. This is the place to go if you are looking for elegance and
luxury in a jungle surrounding. Although it seems a bit too refined for
its location next to a very poor community, the resort is ideal for the
well-to-do, comfort-seeking traveler.
The grounds offer individual and extremely nice cabañas, as well as
hotel rooms in a main building. In all, the facilities can accommodate
well over 100 people. They offer electricity and modern bathrooms
with hot water, landscaped gardens, boardwalks, and relaxing patio
views. The live-animal displays, however, are not what you would
consider true wildlife viewing. The hotel also provides hiking and ca-
noe excursions into the surrounding region, although the areas vis-
ited are fairly developed or disturbed. As is true at any high-end
resort, the service and facilities are excellent. This is a great place to
send the not-so-adventurous, comfort-seeking grandparents. $$$
