Cabañas Cotacocha . As you head down the Río Napo from
Puerto Napo, the first quality tourist facility you find is Cabañas
Cotacocha. Walking from the parking lot along the rock pathway,
through the forest, and among enormous strangler figs, it becomes
immediately obvious that the accommodations are in a great setting.
Cabañas Cotacocha is nestled along the Río Napo in a rustic jungle
environment that combines charm, comfort, and a relaxed atmo-
sphere. Enjoy the afternoon in a hammock or chatting with other
guests on the covered patio. The cabañas, while simple, are very cozy,
with screened sides, comfortable beds, and clean bathrooms with hot
water. Adding to the ambiance are candle and kerosene-lamp light-
ing, rather than electricity. Sleep to the soothing sounds of rain and
insects, and don't be surprised by the small bats flying about in the
evening. Informative local guides can be hired to explore the local for-
est. $$, meals included.
Located a few miles up the Ahuano road in Misahuallí. For reserva-
tions, contact Lizardo García 544 and Reina Victoria, Quito,
/fax 2-
2541-527.
Cabañas Aliñahui . Also known as the Butterfly Lodge, this is an
excellent eco-resort located on a bluff above the Río Napo. The inspir-
ing panoramic views of the rainforest, the Andes, and the surround-
ing snowcapped volcanoes are surpassed only by the region's rich
biological diversity. Cabañas Aliñahui, which means “Good View” in
Quichua, is co-owned by Jatun Sacha and the California-based
Health and Habitat, a nonprofit organization that supports
ecotourism, community development, conservation, and scientific re-
search.
Panning for gold, visiting Jatun Sacha Station, and learning about
the secrets of medicinal plants with a shaman are some of the pack-
age options available. You can enjoy an afternoon swim, take natural-
ist-led hikes into the local jungle, or visit the Conservation Center for
Amazonian Plants of Jatun Sacha. Afterward, you can relax with the
setting sun on vista porches that overlook the river below. At meal-
time, savor exquisite Ecuadorian flavors as you dine in style. Double
cabin-covered porch patios with cozy hammocks complement simple
but comfortable rooms with shared baths. Set within a vast stretch of
primary rainforest, this is the perfect place to enjoy the Amazon. $$$
