In-Depth Information
Between the western chain of the Andes (Cordillera Occidental) and
eastern chain (Cordillera Oriental) is the Sierra Valley , better
known as the Avenue of the Volcanoes . The population here dates
back to pre-Inca times, with Quito, Ecuador's capital, nestled in the
valley at 9,320-foot elevation. The Sierra also contains 260 volcanoes,
six of which are still active.
