Macas
Travel into the far southern expanses of the Oriente requires heading
down towardMacas by plane or by road fromPuyo. Macas is themain
population and commercial center in the southern Oriente, though it
was founded initially as a missionary outpost. The least-explored re-
gion in the upper Amazon Basin lies to the east of Macas and offers a
rich mix of colonial history and indigenous rainforest life. It takes al-
