Where to Eat
A
s with accommodations, meals are included with jun-
gle-lodge excursions. There are only a couple of
places to find food if you're in Coca or Lago Agrio.
Coca
Hostería La Misión ,
6-880-260, on the Napo riverfront, is a bit
pricey, but is one of the few eateries in town that caters to tourists.
The food, which includes American-style breakfasts, is not bad. If
you're looking for something a little cheaper, the restaurant in Hotel
El Auca , Napo, between Rocafuerte and Moreno,
6-880-600, is
better geared for the budget traveler and is a good place to meet
others looking to organize a group jungle tour. Elsewhere, the Ameri-
can-owned Pappa Dans , by the river on Napo and Chimborazo, is a
good place to hang out in the evenings and meet fellow tourists. It
serves good, clean, and safe American food.
Lago Agrio
Hotel El Cofán 's restaurant, 12 de Febrero and Av. Quito,
6-830-
009, offers the best and safest food in town, although it is a bit pricey.
It's nothing to brag about, but then again, this is just a stop on the
way to the jungle. Alternatively, try one of the chifas in town along
Avenida Quito.
When in doubt, or rather when in a small town
in Ecuador that seems to have only the
sketchiest of options for eating, always head for
the local Chinese restaurant - or chifa , as they
are known. The food at the ever-popular chifas
tends to be a good, safe bet, especially when
your other options are limited. Most chifas offer
decent vegetarian, noodle, and rice dishes and
prices tend to be low.
