T
he most convenient and best outfitters for this re-
gion, particularly with regard to organized tours,
are available in Quito. Community-based ecotourism
projects, on the other hand, may require additional
planning and patience once you arrive, but are worth it
if your interest is in a more genuine experience and supporting these
efforts.
The main points of departure into the region are the frontier towns of
Coca on the Lower Río Napo, and Lago Agrio on the Río Aguarico.
These are also the only towns along the tourist path with modern fa-
cilities, such as mail and other communications.
Coca
In Coca, the Andinatel telephone office is at Eloy Alfaro and 6 de
Diciembre, and just south on 9 de Octubre is the post office . Inquire
at your hotel about possible Internet connections, but don't depend on
these as phone lines are often down. Bring your money with you, as
there are no places to change travelers checks and no ATMs. The
Ministry of Interior Environment (Ministerio de Medio
Ambiente) can help out with national park and interior travel. They
are on Amazonas and Bolívar,
6-880-171. Buses congregate on
Napo, between Bolívar and Cuenca.
Lago Agrio
Along the southeastern edge of town is the main road, Avenida Quito.
Almost all tourist services are on this road, which is now paved (but
not well). As in Coca, bring your dollars with you. The Andinatel
telephone office is near the plaza on 18 deNoviembre andOrellana.
To the south, across from the market on Av. Quito, is the police sta-
tion . Farther east along Av. Quito and Vicente Narvaez is the hospi-
tal . The post office is on Rocafuerte and 12 de Febrero. There are no
ATMs in Lago Agrio, though you might be able to exchange travelers
checks at a higher-end hotel.
