whale-watching excursions are also available. $
A complete jump up in quality and price is Hotel Baja Montañita ,
/fax 4-2901-227, in Baja Montañita, along the north-
ern bluffs. Amenities abound in this breezy cliffside resort, including
a poolside bar, hot tub, restaurant, and a bar on the beach. $-$$

A mile south of Montañita near the beach, in Manglaralto, is
Hostería MaraKaya , just off the plaza across from the fire station,
4-2901-294. This simple but very clean and comfortable hotel has
private baths, hot water, mosquito netting and a/c or fans. It has been
the home base for EarthwatchExpeditions, which offers trips into the
Loma Alta Cloud Forest (see page 285). SpeakwithMarlene here; she
can help organize trips into the forest. Rooms are under $5 per per-
son. $
Salinas
Rooms in Salinas are generally overpriced, even during the off-
season. There are no budget accommodations in the town worth rec-
ommending; the better places are generally west of Salinas along the
peninsula and adjacent to La Libertad (to the east). The Hotel El
Curruaje (Malecón 517,
4-2774-282) has a great restaurant and
comfortable rooms with views of the ocean. It's very easy to relax
here. The hotel's small size, modern rooms, and nice atmosphere
make it a popular high-season choice. Check ahead for availability.

On the east end of town, Hotel Miramar , Malecón at Calle 39,
4-
2772-115, is a modern, full-service establishment with all the extras.
The swimming pool, bars, restaurant, and casino are perfect for the
out-of-town location, and rooms come with private baths and air-
conditioning. $$$$
Valdivia
The Valdivia Ecolodge is in Valdivia along the highway Vía Sta.
Elena - Manglaralto, Km 40,
4-2687-046, valdiviaecolodge@
hotmail.com. It offers beachside cabañas that I can't personally vouch
for, but they seem to be the only decent lodging. If you are here, you
are probably visiting the archeological museum, with artifacts of this
pre-Columbian culture. $$
