In-Depth Information
For the best Chinese food in town, try the Chifa Asiático (on
Cañizares near Sucre). It stays open as long as the customers keep
coming and is an ever-loyal backup for those times when you've sim-
ply had enough of the coastal cuisine.
The Restaurant Tiffany , at the east end of Av. Kennedy in Las
Palmas,
6-710-263, is open until midnight and is the best restau-
rant in Esmeraldas. Satisfy your palate with international and Ecua-
dorian cuisine. The portions are generous and the prices won't crush
your budget. The Las Palmas location is a quiet beachfront area.
The best hotel restaurants include La Fragata in the Costa Verde
Suites and the Fenix Restaurant in the Hotel del Mar . Both spe-
cialize in seafood, good service, and tasty meals. Downtown, at
Libertad 407 and Ramón Tello,
6-728-700, fax 6-728-704, the
Apart Hotel Casino also has a great restaurant.
Atacames
There are more beachside restaurants and bars here than you can
shake a stick at. The best ones will be obvious as they are more popu-
lar. Wander along the beachfront street until you find one that ap-
peals to you. Toward the western edge of town are the better
cevicherías .
In areas outside of Esmeraldes, your overnight stay will typically be
part of an all-inclusive package. Be sure to check ahead of time,
though, as sometimes you will need to bring meals with you. And you
may need to pick up a supply of snacks or lunch options before depart-
ing from “civilization.” Waiting interminably for the local taxi boat
may leave you with no option but the local “store” (hut), which means
crackers and an ancient can of sardines. Not a bad meal when you're
stuck in the middle of nowhere!
