and September, occurs at a cooler, foggier time of the year. Many
tourist accommodations close down at times, particularly during

Atacames/Tonsupa
Southwest of Esmeraldas along the coast is the beach-resort town of
Atacames, where vacationing Quiteños and Colombian families flock
for holidays and wet-season weekends. Numerous resort hotels line
the beaches and the noisy nightlife seems endless at times. There are
plenty of opportunities to find good mid-priced accommodations with
amenities and coastal access. In fact, that's why people come here: to
go to the beach, party and relax. Outside of Playas and Montañita in
the south, Atacames is the most popular destination along the coast
for international travelers. Hang out long enough and chances are
you'll bump into someone you know.
Buses heading from Esmeraldas to Muisne pass by often and stop at
the central bus stop, just outside of town. To get to the center, walk on
the diagonal road behind the bus stop and cross over the pedestrian
bridge. Turn right on 21 de Noviembre, which will take you to the
Malecón (the main waterfront street). Alternatively, hire a bicycle
taxi from the many that hang out around the bus stop.

along the beach with friends.

ally all you need to do is poke around until you find something appeal-
ing. If you prefer a more tranquil setting, head to the smaller town of
Tonsupa, located just a few miles north of Atacames.
You can catch a taxi in Esmeraldas or at the airport directly to the
Atacames/Tonsupa area. Buses also leave regularly fromEsmeraldas
heading southwest down the coast. The ride from Esmeraldas takes
about 45 minutes and costs less than $1. Most buses stop near the
road to the footbridge, but check with your driver to make sure. Many
