In & Around Santo
Domingo de los Colorados
In Santo Domingo de Los Colorados, you can find several
hotels along busy (and noisy) Av. 29 de Mayo, but none is
really worth recommending. They are all about the same,
so check around to find a decent roomaway fromthe noise.
You have better options outside of town, at the relatively new Hotel
Don Kleber , a mile north of Santo Domingo on the Quininde-
Esmeraldas Highway,
2-2761-956, fax 2-2761-243, which offers
comfort and style at a good price. Away from the downtown hustle
and bustle, the Don Kleber has a tranquil setting and modern facili-
ties. Enjoy a relaxing lounge session at the bar above the poolside pa-
tio. Thirty choice rooms have private baths and hot water. Located
halfway between the Central Andean Valley and the coast, the hotel
includes an upper-level restaurant serving tasty meals from both re-
gions. $
The popular Hotel Zaracay , Av. Quito 1639 on the main highway
east of town,
2-2750-316 or 2-2750-429, fax 2-2754-535, is reput-
edly the nicest accommodation in the area. With a pleasant atmo-
sphere and all the amenities, rooms are spacious, air-conditioned and
have balconies that overlook a large interior garden patio. There is a
part-time casino and disco, along with a relaxing pool area, a restau-
rant, and a bar. $$
Across from the Zaracay is themoremodest Hotel Tropical Inn , Av.
Quito on the main highway east of town,
2-2761-771 or 2-2761-772,
fax 2-2761-775. Reasonably priced modern rooms, include three- and
four-person suites, have private baths, hot water, TVs, and phones,
and most come with air-conditioning. There's also a pool. $$
Bellavista , c/o Richard Parsons,
/fax 2-2232-313 or 2-2901-536,
9-490-891, www.ecuadorexplorer.com/bellavista, bellavista@
ecuadorexplorer.com, is a favorite nature retreat. It has comfortable
facilities, excellent birding opportunities, wonderful views and rela-
tive proximity to Quito. I particularly enjoyed this modest but cozy
lodge. British-owned, themain building is a three-story dome-shaped
structure with a bar and restaurant on the first level. The 360-degree
views are optimal no matter which way you are facing, offering
bright, airy and intimate surroundings for chatting with newfound
traveler friends.
