been recommended as having the best pizza in town, though I haven't
scaled Loja's streets looking for a better one. For steaks and meat
dishes, try Parillada Uruguaya , at Iberoamérica and Salinas. In-
ternational options include Chalet Francia , at Valdivieso and
Eguiguren, which is well recommended, and México , at Eguiguren
1585 and Sucre.
For an afternoon snack or a nice dessert at the end of a long day, stop
by El Holandés, on Benigno Malo 9-51. They have great ice cream,
pastries and fruit salads.
Vilcabamba
Perhaps not surprisingly, due its emphasis on health, relaxation and
longevity, Vilcabamba offers some of the best in organic vegetarian
(and non-vegetarian) cuisine in the country. Several of the hostels
provide delicious, healthy meals and a few will serve non-guests as
well, including Hostería Vilcabamba ,

Parador Turistico ,
/fax 7-580-272 or
673-122, and Cabañas
Río Yambala .

and bars can be found, again, in Cuenca's high-priced ho-
tels, particularly at Oro Verde and El Crespo . A few hotels have
discos, but I can't personally vouch for the trendy dance scene. If
you're looking for live music and dancing, expect to find it only during
the weekends. Better yet, get to know some locals and join in their fes-
tivities.
El Cafecito , onHonorato Vásquez and Luis Cordero, is usually a fun
place to hang out early in the night. Locals and travelers tend to
gather there by around 6 pm for the beginning of happy hour. It picks
up from thereafter, particularly on the weekends, with music and a
lively atmosphere.
As mentioned above, La Cantina (Las Capulies) is a popular place to
meet with friends, as is the Picadilly Bar , just across the street.
Both are fun places to relax in a somewhat fancy atmosphere, and
