In-Depth Information
El Huerto , Aguirre 8-15, formerly a Hare Krishna-operated restau-
rant under a different name, is one of the better options for good vege-
tarian food. The lunch of the day is a great value at just over $1. The
restaurant may be closed during non-peak hours.
Wunderbar , onHermanoMiguel andCalle Larga, halfway down the
steps, also has nice food and pretty big servings. It's popular with hip
young Cuencanos, as well as travelers, and has a great atmosphere.
Try their pasta dishes.
The restaurant/café and lounge at El Cafecito (see Where to Stay ,
above) offers a small, but good menu with a few tasty vegetarian op-
tions. It is often full of backpackers sipping capuccinos and listening
to American music. Try the quesadilla if you're looking for a light
meal. Prices here are very reasonable.
The Chifa Pack How , Córdova 772 and Cordero, has a comfortably
bright setting, decent portions, and reasonable prices, making it one
of the better chifas in town. If you understand Spanish, you can catch
up with the evening news on their communal TV that seems never to
shut down. One friend's compliment was that the food herewas better
than any Chinese food he could find at home in the Netherlands!
Popular among the locals for Italian food and great pizza is La
Napoletana Pizzeria , at Federico Proano 4-20. You can dine in or
have it delivered.
For good Ecuadorian cuisine, try Los Capulies , at Córdova and
Borrero,
7-832-339. Los Capulies offers perhaps the best combina-
tion of atmosphere - including Andean music on many nights - great
food and reasonable prices. Another favorite is Molinos de Batan ,
near the river at 12 de Abril and El Vadom,
7-811-531, though the
prices are increased by its location. Overall, however, it's a nice option
for local cuisine.
The best restaurants in Cuenca are often associated with the top-end
hotels. Included in this category is La Casona , in the Hotel Crespo,
where the specialty is French and international food. Situated along
the river, the restaurant's view alone is worth the trip. La Cabala
Suiza , in the Oro Verde Hotel, is another restaurant renowned for its
international dishes. The pizzawill definitely keep you coming back.
