In-Depth Information
The comparably priced Grán Hotel , at General Torres 9-70 and
Bolívar,
/fax 7-833-819, is one of themost popular bud-
get choices inCuenca, as popular as El Cafecito. A relaxing patio com-
plements good food. They also offer laundry services, color TV, and
private baths with hot water guaranteed. Very inexpensive for the
quality. $

Hostal Macondo , at Tarquí 11-64 and Mariscal Lamar,
7-840-
697,
/fax 7-833-593, macando@cedei.org, is one of the better budget
choices in Cuenca. A restored and converted colonial home, the
Macondo has basic, comfortable rooms with shared hot-water baths
and nice gardens. The staff is friendly and provides great service.
They offer day-trips in and around the city, although I haven't tried
one, so can't comment on quality. They are also affiliated with a lan-
guage and cultural exchange program, if you want to study Spanish
during your visit. $
Hostal Nusta , on Borrero near Sucre, is a quaint and simple hotel
designed in traditional colonial style. Although fallingwell within the
budget category, it is quite peaceful and charming in its simplicity.
The rooms, all of which are enormous, are very clean (but very bare)
and surround a brick courtyardwith small, corner gardens. Request a
room on the front side of the hotel for a double-door balcony that over-
looks the activity in the street below. If your interest lies more in
peace and quiet, however, move toward the rear of the building. Wa-
ter is hotmost of the time, bathrooms are clean, and laundry service is
available upon request. $
Just down the street from Hostal Nusta is the modern Hostal La
Orquídea , at Borrero 9-31 and Bolívar,
/fax 7-835-
844. It's surprisingly clean and quite bright on the inside, with
painted hues of sunshine yellow. Although the Hostal's basic cafete-
ria-style restaurant, La Casa del Sol , is lacking in character, the
rooms are nice and the staff is quite friendly. Amenities include
money-exchange and fax services, laundry facilities, and more. Sin-
gles, triples, and suites are available. $

Cabañas Yanuncay , at Canton Gualaceo 2-148, between Av. Loja
and Las Americas,
/fax 7-819-681, provides rustic
charm, comfort, and benefits that surpass the other accommodations
in its price range. Located about 10 minutes from the colonial center
of town, this is your best choice if you're looking for tranquility off the
beaten path. The cabañas include shared or private baths, a hot tub
and sauna, and great patio views from comfortable hammocks over-
looking the grounds below. Stroll through the organic farm, learn
