few interesting artifacts, but open hours vary.

Near the junction of Calles Larga and Hermano Miguel, follow the
steps leading down to the Río Tomebamba for the entrance to a small
but interesting museum operated by the Centro Interamericano de
Artesanías y Artes Populares (CIDAP). Displays include traditional
musical instruments, ceremonial attire, and handicrafts. The mu-
seum focuses on local or regional exhibits, but some rotate over time
and may include displays from across the globe.

donations.
Museo del Banco Central
The best overall museum in Cuenca is the Museo del Banco Central,
7-831-225, in the southeastern part of town near the mouth of the
Río Tomebamba and the ruins. The large, modern building is not very
obvious and the last time I was here there was still no sign outside.
The entrance is on Calle Larga near Huayna Capac. In addition to re-
ligious art, there are traditional musical instruments, archeological
artifacts from the Cañaris and Incas, and a display of black and white
photographs of colonial Cuenca. Alternating displays cover modern
art topics.
The museum is open Mon-Fri from 9-6, except during lunch hours,
and Sat 9-1. Nominal entrance fee.
Museo de Arte Moderno
This museum of modern art, on Sucre 15-27 and Coronel Talbot,
7-
831-027, houses a small collection of contemporary art, and periodi-
cally exhibits new collections, mostly the work of local artists.
It's open Mon-Fri, 8:30-6, and Sat and Sun, 9-3. Admission is free.
Museo de Las Culturas Aborigenes
This museum has an interesting collection of pre-Columbian arti-
facts, on Av.10 de Agosto 4-70 and Rafael Torres,
7-880-010, 7-888-
461. It's private collection owned by a Dr. J. Cordero López. The
museum is open to the public Mon-Fri, 9-6. The building has a pleas-
ant courtyard, where you can enjoy refreshments.
