In-Depth Information
community of Luna Runtún . Alternatively, head toward the statue
of the virgin, La Vírgen de Agua Santa , which overlooks Baños. Be-
hind the statue is another footpath and another good hike.
A popular hike nearby is up Volcán Tungurahua , the snow-capped
peak that watches over Baños. Tungurahua, which means “Little
Hell” in Quichua, is still active and is the source of the thermal baths
in town (see page 192). In fact, Baños was temporarily evacuated in
late 1999 due to an increase in volcanic activity from Tungurahua,
which went so far as to lightly blanket the town with ash. Though it
has since quieted down, anything is possible, so be sure to inquire be-
fore heading there. Sangay Park descends to the southeast of
Tungurahua deep into the southern Oriente, much of which is inac-
cessible.
Many of the climbing guides offer hiking excursions as well (see fol-
lowing pages). Or you can inquire with the tour operators and agen-
cies lining the streets of Baños.
Climbing With Gear
Although an easy ascent for experienced technical climbers, the hike
to the climbers' refugio on Tungurahua is beautiful and a great work-
out. From the entrance to the park it's a good four- to five-hour hike
and a 3,270-foot elevation gain to the climbers' refuge. Much of the as-
cent is through remnants of cloud forest and above timberline amid
beautiful wildflowers. If you want only a day-hike, turn around soon
after arriving at the refuge. You don't want to miss your ride back to
Baños, as I did. Returning to town in the dark, after several addi-
tional hours of walking down the mountain, is not a pleasant ending
to a great hike.
If you intend to climb to the summit, spend the night at the refuge ($5)
and wake up for the ascent before sunrise. Many tour outfitters pro-
vide guiding services and climbing equipment, though be sure to do
your research thoroughly if you are using one based out of Baños, as
many of them are shoddy.
Take a taxi or the milk truck from Pensión Pattys to the park en-
trance; entrance fee is $10. Arrange to be picked up at a specific time,
or go with an all-inclusive guide service based out of Baños.
