as stalls along the street between the church and the park selling reli-
gious trinkets, toys and melcochas (excruciatingly sweet toffee).
Other Baños landmarks include the Manto de la VírgenWaterfall ,
or Hair of the Virgin, and its associated Baños de la Vírgen ,orhot
baths, at the southeastern part of town. These are the most popular
baths, though there are several others. To the southwest, up the
mountain a bit and up many flights of stairs, is the rather strange
Statue of the Virgin , watching over Baños with spectacular views.
Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to watch over tourists hiking up to
this point, as there have been reports of robbers assaulting people on
their way. Don't hike there alone, especially at night.

Getting Around
From Ambato, buses depart regularly for the hour-long
ride southeast to Baños and some head on to Puyo. If arriv-
ing from Quito and the bus is continuing south to
Riobamba, make sure to transfer in Ambato.
Visitor Information
Modern services, including banks, post and communi-
cations, are located along Calle Ambato, the main pe-
destrian street in Baños. The post office , is on Ambato
and Halflants just across from Parque Central.
Nearby, on Halflants and Rocafuerte, also adjacent to
the park, is the Andinatel office for telephone calls. Inquire at your
hotel about the latest Internet cafés, or try Banos.net , on Alfaro, be-
tween Ambato and Oriente. There are several laundry facilities
within a couple of blocks of downtown, or ask around at the hotels, as
some of them offer services.
For money matters, Banco del Pacífico is located on Montalvo and
Alfaro, open Monday-Friday. They will change travelers checks.
MasterCard and ATM services are also available. Banco del
Pichincha , on Ambato, cashes travelers checks.
Terminal Terrestre, the main bus station , is on the main road into
town, Ave. Amazonas, between Reyes and Maldonado. From here,
you can catch a taxi to a hotel, but most everything is within walking
distance.
