Machachi
3-309-246, located next to
the old train station in the village of Aloasí, just south and
across the highway from Machachi, is less than a mile off
the Pan-American. This quaint, family-style hotel is a con-
verted farmhouse with a colonial feel and great views of El Corazón
Volcano. In fact, this is a wonderful base from which to explore the
mountain and surrounding countryside by foot, beginning right at
the front door. The home and grounds are beautiful, and the staff is
very friendly. Enjoy the family atmosphere in the common living
room, complete with fireplace and welcome cocktails. Decent food is
served in the dining room on the second floor, and the broad windows
offer great panoramic views on clear days. The rooms are small but
clean, with thick wool-blanketed beds for the cool winter nights. This
is a great, economical home base for excursions to Cotopaxi, Corazón,
the Ilinizas and other locales. $
La Estación de Machachi ,
Nearby is Hostal Casa Nieves ,
2-2315-092, two or three miles
outside town (look for the sign just after the turnout to Aloasí), to the
west of the Pan-American Highway, just before the village of El
Chaupi. CasaNieves has been recommended as a simple, yet comfort-
able, family-run operation, with hot water and options for meals and
horseback riding available. It is the ideal location for exploring
Ilinizas. $$
