sphere is filled with a love for the traditional Otavaleño life. If you are
of their opinion, the American expatriate couple that owns this place
is very friendly, though they won't work with tour operators. They
have gone out of their way to support the local community. Double
rooms with private baths are comfortably decorated. Larger suites
can hold up to six people. A beautiful and spacious garden patio is out
back and rooms open up onto a walkway that overlooks it. There is
also a fabulous restaurant serving a well-rounded menu. On Friday
nights (a two-night stay is required on weekends), experience the
wonderful Andean musica folklórica , with a live group of local, tal-
ented musicians. $$
Otavalo Outskirts
Just a fewmiles northwest of Otavalo are the unique Cabañas Troje
Cotama (Pan-American Highway Km 4,

among native villages and with panoramic views, the facilities are
built with traditional architecture in the original grain-barn style of
the early haciendas. The rooms are in two cabins and include private
bathrooms and hot water. Private fireplaces, comfortable furnish-
ings, and spectacular views come with a healthy dose of peace and sol-
itude. It's well worth a visit. Horses are available. Inquire about

A step up in rural retreats is the Casa Mojanda Mountainside

acres of farmland and forest, a couple of miles from Otavalo on the
road to the Mojanda Lakes. With spectacular views and activities
such as hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, Casa
Mojanda is an ideal setting for the nature enthusiast. The adobe cab-
ins, typical of traditional local architecture, include eucalyptus-
beamed roofs and hand-formed red-clay tiles. Relax in the peaceful
surroundings, complete with outdoor gardens, wonderful views, a li-
brary and social rooms. Live indigenous music accompanies evening
festivities. A little pricey, but meals are included, whichmakes up for
the difference. Rooms are less for one person. $$$-$$$$
