birds complement the scenery below and the Andean backdrop in the
distance. Start early in the morning and hike counterclockwise for
the normal route, particularly if youmay not complete the entire loop.
Lake Cuicocha forms the southern tip of the Cotacachi-Cayapas Eco-
logical Reserve, which spans down the western slopes toward the Pa-

El Ángel Ecological Reserve
Hiking and multi-day trekking opportunities exist in El Ángel, close
to the Colombian border. They are described in the Eco-Travel sec-
tion, below.
Trekking for Conservation:
Cerro Golondrinas Cloud Forest Trek
North of El Ángel and west of the Colombian border town of
Tulcán is the Golondrinas Cloud Forest Reserve, owned
and operated by the Golondrinas Foundation. So far,
Fundación Golondrinas has done an excellent job integrat-
ing ecotourismwith community development and local par-
ticipation, including trekking, agro-forestry, scientific
research and environmental education for local school chil-
dren. Offering two- to four-day treks that begin at 13,734
feet in Andean highlands, the route follows the western
slopes through ever-changing ecosystems until you reach
sub-tropical forest at 3,300 feet. All-inclusive packages in-
clude horses that carry most of the gear, while travelers
have to carry only day-packs. Student discounts and volun-
teer opportunities are available. To make arrangements,

Cayambe Volcano
Volcán Cayambe in the Cayambe-Coca Reserve is Ecua-
dor's third-highest peak at 18,933 feet, and the highest
point on the equator. The mountain, while magnificent, is
