To the Coast
If you're not heading toward the Colombian border, the newest
stretch of highway north of Ibarra veers to the northwest (at
Mascarilla) and the lowland coastal town of San Lorenzo. The dra-
matic drop in elevation is a wonderful way to experience the radically
changing habitat from the Andes down the western slopes to the
coast. And the coast itself, just a short distance away, is a whole other
world. But we'll save that for another chapter.
