In-Depth Information
Most of the tourist shops are in themodern part of Quito, which has as
many stores and shopping malls as most other cities.
The largest of the shopping malls is El Jardín , which is next to the
Parque Carolina, on Amazonas, between Mariana de Jesús and Av.
De La República. It is openMonday-Sunday from 10 am to 8 pm. Far-
ther along Amazonas, at the Naciones Unidas intersection, is the
Centro Comercial Iñaquito , or CCI. Opening hours are also 10 am
to 8 pm. The Centro Comercial El Recreo is on Av. Maldonado at
the El Recreo Trole stop. A smaller shopping center, El Caracol ,ison
Amazonas and Naciones Unidas.
For groceries and other basic supplies, there are plenty of corner
stores in and around the main tourist area of Mariscal Sucre. There
are also several national supermarket chains, which are more expen-
sive, but are likely to carry everything you could possibly need.
Supermaxi is the largest chain of supermarkets in Quito, with
branches throughout the city. Find it in El Jardín, CCI, and El
Recreo. Mi Comisariato is another supermarket chain with loca-
tions in many of the larger cities. There is one in the Quicentro shop-
ping mall, just a few blocks from CCI, on Av. Naciones Unidas
between Los Shyris and 6 de Diciembre.
If you prefer to shop in the open, with a little local flavor and better
prices, check out the street markets. For Mercado Santa Clara ,on
Versalles and Dávalos, take the Trole to the Santa Clara stop.
Libri Mundi , centrally located at Juan
León Mera N23-83 and Veintimilla,
2-
2234-791, has the best book selection in the
city, including Spanish, English, German,
Italian and French topics. Nearby, on the
corner of Calama and Juan León Mera, is
Confederate topics , with a wide selection
of second-hand topics, all economically
priced, of course. Local and international
newspapers can be purchased at news-
stands along Amazonas Avenue.
Artesanías , or crafts, and souvenirs can be purchased fromstreet ven-
dors or at the many stores that line the streets of the Mariscal area.
Shop around for the best quality and prices, however, as they can
vary significantly.
