In-Depth Information
A personal favorite is CaféHavana on Juan LeónMera and Calama.
They have a DJ most nights and relatively cheap cocktails and beers.
It's usually quiet earlier in the evening, but the dance floor fills up by
around 11 pm. It's a popular haunt for tourists and locals alike, al-
though last time I was there it was dead and it's generally hit-or-miss.
El Cafecito , at Luis Cordero 1124,
2-2234-862, has a cozy bar with
a fireplace and is popular among budget travelers. Although they
have a nice outside patio, it is often a bit too chilly later in the evening,
and they don't have outside heaters.
The Reina Victoria is a British pub on Reina Victoria (surprisingly
enough), 530 and Roca,
2-2226-369. They have a fireplace, dart
boards and European beers, but the atmosphere is lacking. They also
serve food, but it's not the best. A popular meeting place for British
expats.
La Bodeguita de Cuba , at Reina Victoria and La Pinta, is a Cuban
restaurant that blares with live, danceable Cuban music on Thurs-
day evenings.
Arribar , on Juan León Mera and Santa María, is an ever-popular
bar, with two levels, depending on what kind of atmosphere you're af-
ter. Downstairs they have loud European techno and dance music,
with a pool table. It can get a bit rough here on the weekends. Up-
stairs is a quieter place for chilling out over a drink or two. They also
serve tapas-style food and sandwiches.
Right around the corner on Lizardo García 662 and Juan León Mera,
is Mayo 68 , which offers a more intimate setting. This is a great
salsateca , playing mostly traditional Latin dance and salsa music. If
for no other reason, go there to check out the really good dancers. Get
there early though - the place really is small.
El Pobre Diablo, Isabel La Católica and Francisco Galavis,
2-
2222-4982, is another laid-back café/bar, serving snacks and sand-
wiches. They offer inexpensive cocktails, and good live jazz and blues
music. Popular with college students.
I highly recommend a night out at Seseribó , Veintimilla and 12 de
Octubre,
2-2563-598, one of the bigger and better night clubs in
Quito. They're open from Thursday to Sunday, and have a cover
charge. Very popular among the trendy young Quiteños, they play
mostly Caribbean and salsa music. The dancing's great, especially if
you can find a willing partner to teach you the moves. Drinks are ex-
pensive.
