Where to Eat
T
he vast majority of eateries in Quito are in the new
part of the city. Those in the Old City tend to cater
mostly to locals, and hygiene and quality can be dubious.
Modern Quito, however, provides an array of interna-
tional cuisine, particularly in the more tourist-oriented section of
town near Amazonas. The best fine dining is found in the luxury ho-
tels. Some of the area's new foreign restaurants provide better food
and sanitary conditions than the local establishments, as they cater
to the traveler and are the result of foreign capital. Still, there are a
few good Ecuadorian cuisine options.
For good, typical Ecuadorian food and decent portions try Mama
Clorinda , at Reina Victoria and Calama,
2-2544-362. Prices are
very inexpensive by Western standards, and the staff is efficient and
friendly. This is a great, centrally located option for the budget trav-
eler. The llapingachos (pancake-like potato, onion and cheese
patties) are particularly tasty.
Experience live music many nights at Rincón La Ronda , Belo
Horizonte 400 and Almagro,
2-2540-459, a very up-market restau-
rant (they have a red carpet leading from the street to the door, and
the host proudly wears a top hat and tails), serving top-notch Ecua-
dorian dishes. This place is popular with the more affluent locals and
tourists. The service is second to none, and they have a nice selection
of wines and liqueurs.
La Choza , at 12 de Octubre 1821 and Luis Cordero,
2-2230-839,
serves good traditional meals in a nice setting. Prices are moderate to
expensive.
If you happen to be in the Old City for lunch or dinner, Cueva del
Oso , Edificio Pérez Pallares on Chile 1046 and Venezuela,
2-2586-
623, is expensive, but well worth it. Serving traditional Ecuadorian
food, La Cueva definitely caters to the more affluent crowd. Service is
exceptional and the art deco interior is impressive. Try the locro de
papas, a potato specialty.
La Bodeguita de Cuba , at Reina Victoria and La Pinta, offers the
best Cuban food in the area. It's a bit pricey, but the atmosphere is
nice and they have excellent livemusic, at least onThursday nights.
