make sure the taxi driver knows how to get here before starting the
fare on the meter. With rooms that run $25 to $50 per night, it is one
of the better values. $$
A relative newcomer is La Cartuja , at Leonidas Plaza 170 and 18 de
Septiembre,
/fax 2-2226-391, cartuja@uio.
satnet.net, www.hotelacartuja.com. It's located at the site of the for-
mer British Embassy. The young couple from Spain who own it has
created a very quaint and pleasant B&B, complete with lovely, com-
fortable rooms and a Spanish-style garden patio. Restaurant, laun-
dry and other modern facilities are also available. Expect to pay $25-
$40. $$

Moving on up, Mansión del Ángel , at Wilson E5-29 and Juan León
Mera,
/fax 2-2237-819, is an elegantly renovated co-
lonial building. The French design is exquisite, and you may feel as if
you are in amuseum, rather than a hotel. It's brightly decorated, with
antique furniture and lots of cushions, or fluff, shall we say. The patio
upstairs is particularly nice. Amenities include full-size bathrooms
with hair dryers and robes. Room prices run $50 to $100 per night.

Among the less expensive of the “luxury” hotels is the Hotel Tambo
Real , at 12 de Octubre and Patria, across from the US Embassy,

/fax 2-2554-964. It has 24-hour room service and, as with
several of the top-end hotels, a casino. Room prices range from $50 to
$100 per night. $$$
Hotel Sebastián , with a European flare, is among the best values
among the modern accommodations, at Almagro 822 and Cordero,
/fax 2-2222-500, hsebast1@
hsebastion.com.ec. With 56 rooms, it has an intimate feel, and is
priced well. The rooms, some with balconies and great views, have all
the amenities of a luxury hotel without the extra fluff. Meals are good,
purified water is safe to drink directly out of the tap, and organic food
is served at the café and restaurant. Hotel Sebastián is popular with
the better tour operators. Roomprices run $50 to $100 per night. $$$

A comparable luxury hotel is the Chalet Suisse , at Reina Victoria
312 and Calama,
/fax 2-2563-966, www.
hotelchaletsuisse.com, which includes a sauna and exercise room. I
have not eaten in the restaurant, but the food is French, and the staff
claims to have fed, among others, King Juan Carlos II of Spain, Prin-
cess Caroline of Monaco and various South American presidents - if
that whets your appetite. As with many of the luxury hotels, you can
