The Guayasamín Foundation
World-renowned Oswaldo Guayasamín was arguably one
of the most famous Ecuadorian painters. He graduated
from the School of Fine Art inQuito as painter and sculptor,
went on to exhibit all over the world, and was the recipient
of a number of prestigious awards. His murals decorate the
UNESCO headquarters in Paris, Barajas airport inMadrid
and the Government and Legislative Palaces in his home-
town of Quito. There is even an art museum dedicated to
Guayasamín in Havana, Cuba. Sadly, he passed away in
1999, though his paintings are as popular as ever. Today,
you can still find young Quiteño artists adopting his style
and selling art throughout the country. The Guayasamín

Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana
You can't miss the House of Ecuadorian Culture if you're anywhere
near the Parque El Ejido, as it is a large, circular glass building. In-
side are wonderful displays of indigenous musical instruments and
traditional attire. The focus is on Ecuador, but other regions of the
world are also included. A theater shows good international films
(check the local and entertainment papers for schedule) and music is
performed in the auditorium. This is the site of Ecuador's best mu-
seum, known as the Nacional del Banco Central del Ecuador, cover-
ing three floors and with numerous wonderful exhibits.

The museum is at Av. Patria and 12 de Octubre,
Museo Jacinto de Jijón y Caamaño
Located nearby, in the library of the Catholic University
(Universidad Católica) this museum has archeological exhibits, in-
cluding pre-colonial and colonial artifacts and portraits. It is at Av.
Patria and 12 de Octubre, open Mon-Fri, 9 am-4 pm, and Sat, 10 am-
3 pm. There is a nominal entrance fee.
