fecund. 26 The rest of the Y chromosomes in the Mongolian population, and
indeed most Y chromosomes in Asia and elsewhere, come in a wide variety
of dif erent types, none of which is especially common. The males who carry
these other Y chromosomes have inherited them from less fecund recent
ancestors.
Genghis Khan, the most successful nomad of them all, rode his way to
domination over half the known world on the back of a sturdy Mongolian
horse. He was assisted by two important inventions that had been made ear-
lier, the stirrup and the short recurved bow that allow a horseman to fi re
arrows in any direction while riding. It is strongly suspected that he and his
immediate male relatives carried the Y chromosome that is now so common
in Mongolia and the regions nearby.
