A note on the photographs
I used Canon D60, 20D, and 1DIII digital cameras, and most of the pictures
started as raw fi les. There are a few scanned photos from the ancient days of
fi lm. Underwater pictures were taken with the aid of a marvelous and faith-
ful Ikelite DSLR housing and two Ikelite strobes. Many of the pictures have
been cropped, and I employed temperature, tonal curve, and contrast adjust-
ments to improve the color and tonal balance. This was especially necessary
for the underwater photographs, in which even the best-lit subjects often
appear too blue. As is common in photography I often used dodging and
burning to emphasize the subject in the picture relative to its background.
And in the underwater pictures I used Photoshop to remove those annoying
little creatures that fl oat about in the water and refl ect the light back to the
lens in the form of little bright spots. I have not, however, removed, added, or
rearranged any other objects in the pictures.
