In-Depth Information
Genes that infl uence these behaviors will be relatively easy to locate on the
chromosomes of dif erent dog breeds.
As a genetic bonus, human medicine is likely to be greatly advanced by
the study of dogs. Over 300 dog diseases with a genetic component have
human equivalents. Some dogs also exhibit behavioral abnormalities remi-
niscent of human aberrant behaviors—my favorite is “Springer Spaniel Rage
Syndrome.” Is this a canine genetic equivalent to human road rage, and do
easily enraged humans and dogs carry equivalent genes?
Dogs are likely to point the way to understanding genetic infl uences
on human behavior. They will continue to be man's best friend, even at the
genetic level.
